The final group game between the two delivered on its promise of intensity, but it took a while to warm up. Like a lot of teams over the past few days, both teams would’ve advanced with a draw. Even a Croatia win would, and did, work, so long as it was closer. Croatia controlled the game early but there wasn’t a super heightened sense of urgency from either side for most of the first half, even after Croatia took the lead. The second half was when the match really came alive, and a dramatic VAR episode never hurts. While Croatia came away with the points, both teams are through to the Round of 32. Croatia faces Portugal on Thursday in Toronto and Ghana will go up against Colombia on Friday in Kansas City.
